Milton Historical Society Scholarship Awarded yearly to a high school senior. Applications must be submitted by April 15. 2008 Recipient: Zachariah Bloom Purpose Established by the Milton Historical Society through the fundraising efforts of its members and docents, this Scholarship is meant to assist and encourage a worthy and community-minded student to obtain post-secondary education through an accredited college, university or technical school. It may be used for fees, books, and/or supplies required for courses taken by the student while enrolled. This Scholarship is given as a tribute to Joseph Goodrich. Goodrich settled in what was then called Prairie du Lac in 1838, and through his dedication and community spirit he helped to establish what eventually became today's Milton. He founded Milton College, established Goodrich Park, started the public school system and the Seventh-Day Baptist Church in Milton, brought the railroad here and served as Milton's first postmaster. In 1844, he built the Milton House, a hexagonal concrete stagecoach inn. In 1998 the Milton House was declared to be a National Historic Landmark, the highest honor the National Park Service can bestow, in part because of Joseph Goodrich's documented Underground Railroad activities. Joseph Goodrich spent much of his life in service to others, and this Scholarship is meant to continue that legacy. Amount One $300 scholarship will be awarded to the recipient upon proof of the successful completion of the fall term. The student must attain at least a 2.0 (C) average for that term and provide proof of registration for that term. Eligibility Applicants must be graduating seniors from Milton High School with a GPA of at least 2.0 (C). They must be planning to attend an accredited college, university or technical school in the fall following graduation. Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to the community of Milton. Applicants who are members of the Milton Historical Society or who perform volunteer service for the Society will receive preference. The Society at its own discretion reserves the right not to award the Scholarship should no applicants meet the requirements for eligibility. Selection The Board of Directors of the Milton Historical Society shall select the recipient. Application Procedure Applicants should apply through the Guidance Office at the Milton High School. Applications must include a transcript. Letters of recommendation are welcome. Deadline Application must be received by the Guidance Office by April 15. |
